Fireman's Fund Insurance Company
San Francicsco 1863

It is not strange, in view of the fact that the fireman was in such favor in the year that the company was organized, that the plan of donating 10 per cent of the profits to the fireman’s charitable fund should have been adopted and that the name “Fireman’s Fund should have been chosen. The constitution of the company even provided that –“one fourth of the directors shall be active or exempt members of the San Francisco Fire Department.” Of this group were Fred D. Kohler, the first Chief of the San Francisco volunteer fire department and David Scannell, who served off and on for twenty-eight years, first as Chief Engineer of the volunteers and later as Chief of the paid fire department.
