THROWN FROM APPARATUS

JACK KIERNAN KILLED

THE PUGILIST'S BACK BROKEN BY FIRE-ENGINE 6.

1892 May 21

Thomas Kennedy, alias "Jack Kiernan," the pugilist, was brought to the Receiving Hospital in a dying condition late last night. His back was broken and the bones of the pelvis were crushed.

The doctors did all in their power to relieve him, but decided at 2 o'clock this morning that he was past all skill, and a priest was sent for who came and administered the last sacrament of the Catholic Church. He died half an hour later.

Kennedy was an ex-member of the Fire Department and has a brother who is still a member of Engine Company No. 6. At 11:40 o'clock the engine was called by an alarm sent in from the box at the corner of Seventh and Harrison streets Kennedy jumped upon the engine, and as it was turning the corner of Sixth and Harrison streets was thrown to the ground. One of the heavy wheels passed over him, crushing his body beneath it. A patrol-wagon was summoned and he was taken to the hospital;
